We have four retreats per month. One retreat takes place every Sunday fortnight from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. The other retreat takes place every Saturday fortnight from 9.00 am on the Saturday until 9.00 am on Sunday. The Saturday retreats are on the alternate weeks to Sunday retreat. You can stay overnight at the Temple if you want to and you will be provided with food and shelter. There are no beds provided but you should bring: your own sheets, blanket(s), pillow(s) and necessities. You must also bring along and wear a grey praying robe.
We vow and recite to strictly follow these five precepts which are refrain from:
- Deliberately causing the death of any living being;
- Intentionally taking for one’s own the property of an other;
- Sexual misconduct, in particular adultery;
- Lying and breaking promises;
- Drinking alcohol and taking stupefying drugs which lead to a weakening of mindfulness and moral judgment.
We also vow not to:
- indulge in sleeping on a soft bed;
- wear perfume and jewellery;
- have between meal snacks.
We follow what is said in the sutras: “Compassion and kindness are the basis of Buddhism”. We are also practice the Six Paramitas (Perfections):
- Giving
- Abiding by the precepts
- Patience
- Diligence
- Deep concentration
- Wisdom
Our main activities are:
- Conducting and participating in Buddhist ritual in the Vietnamese way
- Chanting of the name of Amitabha Buddha with total concentration.
- Chanting Sutras such as: The Heart Sutra, Amitabha Sutra, Lotus Sutra, The Forty Eight Vows Of the Lord Amitabha Buddha, The Vows Ksitigarbha Sutra and the Medicine Sutra in Vietnamese.
- Sitting meditation and walking meditation.
- Dharma talks are given by: Venerable Thich Phuoc Tan, Venerable Thich Phuoc Huu, Venerable Thich Phuoc Thai, Venerable Thich Minh Tu and Thich Phuoc Thien or some other Venerable monks who are invited by the Abbot of the temple.
- Having vegetarian food at lunch, dinner and breakfast (if you are staying at night.)
- Celebrating birthday parties for all the members who were born in the same month.
- Outside retreat: two per year.
We support any fund raising at the Temple. Therefore the members of this group can also be in the cooking team at the Temple and they could help in some ritual funeral services if they are happy to join in. These works are voluntary work.
We also have three retreats per year in April, August and December. Those retreats last longer, for seven days each. We call the retreats "Kết Ky Niệm Phật". We have three activity sessions per day such as: Morning, Afternoon and Evening. Beside all these activities: meditation, chanting and Dharma talk, we provide more activities such as:
- Candle lighting ceremonies.
- Question time
- Memorial Amitabha Buddha day is on December retreat.
There is no fee charged for any of the retreats but we accept donations.
All are welcome to participate in any retreat even you are not member of this group.
